KidsFringe Haiti Project

Bienvenue! ACFFC Children’s Theatre Company

How better to celebrate 30 years of creating independent theatre — and local community — than by sharing the experience?

With much support behind them, Mike Ford, Operations Director of Fringe Theatre Adventures, and local writer Patti McIntosh travelled to Jacmel, Haiti to spread a little bit of Fringe ... and support the founding of the ACFFC Children’s Theatre Company.

Over a four-week period, the team collaborated with the Art Creation Foundation for Children (ACFFC), a non-profit organization based in Jacmel, Haiti to: build a stage on an empty field, design and create a backdrop, rehearse two traditional Haitian folk tales, write and rehearse a song and an original play about life at the ACFFC ... and fill that field with a very appreciative audience for the inaugural performance of the ACFFC Children’s Theatre Company.

We are thrilled to bring all that work to KidsFringe audiences. Bienvenue! ACFFC Children's Theatre Company to Fringeopolis! Throughout the 11 days of the Festival at the KidsFringe, 10 young artists from ACFFC will perform folk stories and vignettes about growing up in Haiti. Marty Chan, playwright and author of children's books, will assist in their development, along with playwright/storyteller Tololwa Mollel.

Special “thank you” to the Edmonton Arts Council and the TransAlta Festival City grant program for their support.

FTA is currently accepting donations to support the ACFFC artists’ stay in Edmonton. For more information on how to donate, please contact Mike Ford: mike.ford@fringetheatre.ca or (780) 448-9009.

Participants of KidsFringe Haiti Project treated to a day of fun courtesy of TELUS

August 16, 2011

The KidsFringe Haiti Project participants enjoyed a day at the Telus Innovation Centre. From the 31st floor they were able to view several of Edmonton’s landmarks: the Art Gallery of Alberta, City Hall, Commonwealth Stadium and Rexall Place.

They were also shown a mock hospital bed and equipment that magnified images of their hair and skin and projeccted them onto a large screen. Pizza, juice and dessert followed.

Then they watched the movie Rango in high-definition. After the movie they were presented with gift backpacks containing colouring books, crayons, flashlights, water bottles and stuffed toys.

Thanks to TELUS for offering this great opportunity to the children from Haiti.

We are grateful for the TransAlta Festival City Grant from Edmonton Arts Council and TransAlta which allowed the KidsFringe Haiti Project to happen.

Please support our many local supporters who gave generously to the KidsFringe Haiti project. Donated tools and materials used for the project stay with the Art Creation Foundation for Children (ACFFC) in Jacmel, Haiti for future projects.

Other donations, such as art supplies, tents and signs, will help facilitate activities in the KidsFringe program and the sale of original Haitian artwork in support of the ACFFC on the main Festival site. As well, many restaurants in the Old Strathcona area will host our Haitian friends to delicious meals during their visit in Edmonton.

We are extremely grateful for all the support we have received to date and welcome more donations as the Fringe Festival approaches!
